DATE: Saturday June 27, 2020 1/2 Marathon Start: TBD AM, perhaps 9:00?
ONLINE registration (1/2: $41) opens at 12:01 AM, Friday, November 22nd, 2019
A portion of every registration will be donated directly to the Finger Lakes Trail Conference to help protect, maintain, and foster responsible use of the trails we enjoy.
Goose Adventure Racing is excited to announce the sixth running of the Ontario Summit Trail Races. We will host a Spring trail 1/2 marathon trail race at Ontario County Park – Gannett Hill on Saturday, June 27th, 2020. The trail 1/2 marathon will start at TBD AM (lilely 9:00 AM).
It goes without saying that this year has been a challenge for event planning. We are moving ahead with holding a race on June 27th, but be aware that if our tentative approvals hold, there will be some changes. The current state of the race is…
We will not hold the race if the Finger Lakes Region of NYS has not reopened to at least Phase Three (but preferably Phase 4). Phase 2 is too restrictive to host an event and the liability and safety is not worth the risk. We are also at the will of the agencies graciously allowing us to use their property and they have reserved the right to remove their approval at any time.
We are eliminating the full marathon and will hold ONLY a ½ marathon for this year. This is to reduce congestion, to simplify aid station traffic for increased sanitation and cleaning, and to simplify race management. Any registered marathon runner will be moved to the ½ marathon and will receive a refund for the difference in price at packet pickup or via mail if requested.
We are capping the race to a total of 80 racers (100 if the Finger Lakes Region makes it to phase 4 by race day). This will help us better facilitate reasonable distancing and will make small-group wave starts manageable if necessary. Waves will be determined closer to race day if deemed necessary.
All racers will be required to wear face coverings at the start, finish, and at aid stations during the race. All participants will receive a free polyester face/neck gaiter from us at bib pickup to use.
Aid station food will all be prepackaged, meaning we will only have Gu brand gels, this year so no loose Swedish fish, M&M's, pretzels or watermelon unfortunately. Water will be provided in factory closed individual water bottles. The masked and gloved aid station volunteers will also have jugs of Tailwind and water for filling of your handheld or hydration bladder.
If you want something specific at aid stations that are not listed above, we will provide 1-gallon ziplock bags at packet pickup that will be delivered to the aid stations pre-race. These will be discarded post-race and will not be returned.
We are not able to have a post-race meal this year. We will provide pre-wrapped cookies, chips, candy, beverages, and whatever else we can find that looks good to snack on post-race. We have reserved two lodges and three pavilions so if you want to hang out before or after the race, there will be space to responsibly distance and enjoy the park.
We are sorry we can't give you the OSTR experience you have come to expect. We understand that these changes may not appeal to everyone. Anyone can drop from the race and receive a full refund (except for the Ultrasignup fee) for any reason before Friday, June 19. In addition, if for some reason we are not permitted to hold the race we will also issue refunds.
We will keep you posted on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/28355776765) and via Ultrasignup email as race day approaches. And if you are really missing having some Goose in your life then maybe you're interested in having some Goose on your back, we will have our now-entirely-incorrect race calendar T-shirts available for sale. Tell your friends they are a rare misprints that makes them worth more!
2020 Race Season Shirts
We are changing our approach to race shirts this year. Starting with the 2020 Muddy Sneaker (and our other trail races this year), you will NOT receive a race shirt as part of your registration fee. To compensate for this, we have dropped the price of each of our races by $5.00. But what if you really want a shirt? We are offering a super nice and durable Patagonia T-shirt as an add-on purchase at any of our races. The shirt is a higher quality shirt than we have ever offered, and at a price lower than what you would pay at the store. Add-on purchases can be made at the time of registration and will be available at packet pickup.
The Ontario Summit Trail Races
You can expect to enjoy some amazing wooded trails that you might not have experienced before. The course consists of a high percentage of rolling tree-covered single-track located mostly around the summit of Gannett Hill, the highest point in Ontario County. You will run on nearly every trail within Ontario County Park, as well as a few trail surprises. There will be rocks, roots, wooden bridges, and some awe-inspiring views. The Ontario Summit Trail Races will be capped at a maximum of 80 racers (individual events are not capped).
What to expect
Like any of Goose’s events, don’t expect to achieve a trail PR on this course. The Half-marathon course will consist of a full 13.1 miles of one-way running with no two-way traffic. The Marathon will be two loops of the half marathon course. The race course is incredibly spectator friendly, so expect to be cheered on by friends and family throughout the race, not just at the start and finish. We are excited to present these races at a great value of $41 for the half marathon distance and only $51 for the full marathon. Prices will increase by $10 after March 13, 2020.
Runners will be supported during the race with 3 fully-stocked aid stations, every 3-4 miles along the course, with water, electrolyte drinks, gels, salty snacks, ginger ale and Coke.
All participants will receive a generous post-race picnic banquet. Finishers will receive a custom finisher award.
A full course map and elevation profile are provided below. Did you hear about the Gell Center Hill? We offer some serious elevation change on privately-owned trails for the mountain goats out there.
Time Cutoff (not applicable for 2020)
The trail marathon is two loops of the ½ marathon course. Runners must complete the first lap within 3 hours and thirty minutes to be able to proceed onto the second lap (16 minute/mile pace). Runners not meeting the time cutoff will not be permitted to continue racing, but will be recognized and rewarded as a ½ marathon finisher.
The ½ marathon will not have a time cutoff.
Plans change, so Goose Adventure Racing will provide withdrawal refunds for any reason prior to June May 19th.
NOTE: Refunds will only be for the race entrance fee; refunds will not include the Ultra Signup administration fee. We may implementa waitlist for the 2020 race.
Distance Switching (not applicable for 2020)You may change your race distance at any time before June 2nd via Ultrasignup now!. Moving up to the marathon from the ½ marathon will require a payment of $10. There will be no refund for dropping to the 1/2 marathon from the marathon.
On race day, any marathon distance runner that drops out of the marathon after completing one complete loop will receive a finishing time and finisher award for the ½ marathon, but will not be eligible for overall or age group ½ marathon awards.
Awards (not applicable for 2020)
Awards will be presented separately for both race distances. Award Categories for both men and women will be as follows, with no double-dipping;
• Overall M/F (3 deep)
• Overall Masters M/F (1 deep)
